IMC, short for Intermediate Metal Conduit, is a steel raceway of circular cross section, which is threaded, and nominally 10′ long. EVT IMC pipe is manufactured according to UL 1242 and ANSI C80.6, Electrical Intermediate Metal Conduit – Steel.
Conduit IMC is designed as a thin-wall alternative to RMC (rigid metal conduit). IMC (Intermediate Metal Conduit), as its name implies, is lighter than RMC, weighs about one-third less than RMC but it has a larger interior diameter. On the other hand, IMC is heavier than EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing).
IMC conduit is interchangeable with RMC. According to NEC Articale 342 and 344, we can use IMC wherever Rigid Metal Conduit is allowed. Both two electrical conduit pipes use the same conduit fittings.
