Job Description: Corning Inc. is searching for a controls scientist/engineer who believes that application of cutting edge controls technology can improve manufacturing processes to provide competitive advantage. This is an opportunity to have significant impact by improving manufacturing process controls, conducting multivariate data analytics to improve process understanding, and provide optimization solutions for manufacturing and supply chain operations. The position of Advanced Process Control Engineer is considered the one of the most versatile technical roles within Corning, Inc. The scope and educational requirements of this position can be very broad to provide controls solutions that will enable novel process and manufacturing methods. The field of controls is evolving rapidly from the traditional temperature sensing and control to the large complex multi-input, multi-output systems requiring modern controls, data analytics and modeling. Corning’s MTE division is seeking an advanced process controls engineer to support development of new processes, optimization of existing processes, and utilization of modern process controls strategies to improve our manufacturing processes.

Job Responsibilities: The specific job responsibility will be dependent upon the active project and may include but not be limited to:

• Design, develop and implement process controls solutions for Engineering and Manufacturing processes.

• Evaluate existing control strategies and propose enhancements. Optimize or retrofit existing processes through modern control strategies such as optimal control, robust control, adaptive control, or model predictive control.

• Work closely with manufacturing to define appropriate controls hardware platforms/systems for implementing process control solutions

• Develop and apply process controls skills to implement solutions in PLC/DCS environments.

• Implement, test, and troubleshoot developed process control strategies.

• Develop in-depth knowledge of existing processes to identify process control optimization opportunities and write proposals to initiate control projects.

• Work with process subject matter experts and apply process data analysis skills to gain fundamental understanding of manufacturing processes.

• Work closely with experienced professionals in multi-disciplined teams to design, develop and implement solutions for manufacturing processes

• Utilize multivariate analysis to design for process capability

• Lead projects and work in a multi-disciplinary research, development, and engineering environment to identify opportunities for advanced controls.

• Leverage optimization techniques to improve process performance and efficiency.

• Facilitate the transfer of new process control technologies into manufacturing and provide training to manufacturing and engineering personnel.

• Document process control finding in technical reports. Generate intellectual property through invention disclosures and patent applications.

Travel Requirements:

• Possible international and domestic travel. Could travel as much as 25%.

Required Education:

• Masters or PhD in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering with heavy coursework focus on Advanced Controls, Data Analytics or Optimization. PhD highly preferred.

Required Years of Experience:

• 1 -5 years of experience in industry on manufacturing processes. New graduates with related internship experience will be considered.
