Role Summary:
Baker Hughes, a GE company is seeking to add a dynamic and highly motivated Engineering Team Leader to our fiber-optic well monitoring product development team in Blacksburg Virginia. The role will span the range of engineering work from research, to new product development to continuous product improvement and modification and will include substantial interaction with manufacturing team members and field deployment personnel. The role is ideal for a creative multidisciplinary leader, with a main emphasis on mechanical engineering but also involving material sciences, optics and fiber-optic test and measurement.
Essential Responsibilities:
The role will be responsible for:
• Primarily mechanical engineering in product development, design, sustaining and R&D in fiber-optic well monitoring
• Development of novel fiber-optic sensing devices possibly including novel optical fibers, fiber-optic cables and Bragg grating devices.
• Packaging of novel fiber-optic sensing systems for deployment into optical well monitoring applications
• Modification of existent sensing products to meet new oil and gas markets
• Leading projects through structured product development process, including documentation of gates and milestones
• Interaction with suppliers to identify new materials and components for use in products.
• Interaction with field personnel and customer personnel to identify and solve field issues and support successful deployments.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 5+ years of engineering experience OR Master’s degree in Engineering with 3+ years of engineering experience OR PhD in Engineering with 2+ years of engineering experience
• 2+ years of experience in fiber-optics or optical sensing particularly with packaging, materials, optics or opto-mechanical skills
• Leadership skills – ability to organize meetings, project tasks and problem solving sessions for small teams of individuals
• Communication skills, both verbal and written
• Demonstrated problem solving skills for engineering challenges
• Good organizing, planning, and presentation skills.
• Must be action oriented, ethical in value, and customer focused with a drive for results.
• Ability to manage time, make quality decisions, and manage and measure work.
Desired Characteristics:
• Direct work with optical fiber handling, splicer technologies, fiber cables, and downhole deployment requirements
• 2D and 3D CAD software experience preferably with SolidWorks
