The City of Buffalo is accepting applications for the position of Commissioner of Police. The City of Buffalo is one of the 100 largest United States metropolitan areas, and the second largest city in the State of New York. It has a population of approximately 280,000 people. Located on the banks of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, Buffalo is in the “Canadian-American Corridor” and is one of the nation’s key border crossing locations.
The City of Buffalo Commissioner of Police is charged with the power and duty of governing and disciplining a diverse workforce of 795 sworn officers and 165 unsworn public sector employees through the creation of orders, rules and regulations. The Commissioner is also responsible for providing leadership and oversight of the Buffalo Police Department and its functions, which include the duty and power to preserve peace and order, to prevent violations of law and to safeguard the rights, health and property of the public.
Qualifications: a degree from an accredited college or university and at least five years experience in law enforcement or an equivalent of training and experience sufficient to indicate ability to perform the duties of this position. The candidate should have a proven track record of innovative problem resolution, effective management skills and implementing programs and initiatives that cut costs and reflect increased productivity levels.
The successful candidate will be appointed by the Mayor, subject to confirmation by the Common Council. The City of Buffalo offers a fair and competitive benefit package and an annual salary of $116,000.
